F1 2008: Australian Qualifying

Australia was the track chosen to start the 2008 season, a season that needs a lot of people to do a lot of work to make Formula 1 regain its standing and turn away from some of the mess of last year.

Formula 1 teams ready to rumble!

THE Brackley-based Honda F1 Racing Team and Silverstone’s Force India team will be blasting away from the starting grid as the 2008 FIA Formula 1 World Championship starts this weekend.
As the field prepares for the opening round of the season in Australia, all eyes are on the anticipated battle for overall race honours. Ferrari, McLaren and Renault are expected to set the early pace, with their lead drivers Kimi Raikkonen, Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso particular stand-outs, but for readers of the Advertiser & Review, interest centres on cars competing in the midfield region.

Brackley-based Honda F1 Racing Team will be represented on-track this season by Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello, while Silverstone’s Force India will have Giancarlo Fisichella and Adrian Sutil in their Ferrari-powered cars. Read more…

Raikkonen fails to qualify at Australia GP

Melbourne (dpa) - Vice world champion Lewis Hamilton grabbed top ranking for the season’s first Formula 1 run in qualifying races Saturday. The 23-year-old McLaren-Mercedes driver turned the fastest round with 1:26.714 minutes before Sunday’s Australian Grand Prix.

He was followed by Robert Kubica of Poland in BMW-Sauber; Heikki Kovalainen of Finland in McLaren-Mercedes; and Felipe Massa of Brazil in Ferrari.

World champ Kimi Raikkonen of Finland failed to qualify for top position after mechanical problems with his Ferrari, and will have to join the pack Sunday in the Melbourne race.

Webber chasing winning formula

A WEEK after Australia’s motor sport hero Casey Stoner raced to another victory, Mark Webber can only dream of a similar finish in the Formula 1 Grand Prix at Albert Park.

Webber, 31, is yet to win at the top level in 105 starts over six seasons. Indeed, he has stood on the podium just twice.

Contrast that record with Stoner, the MotoGP world champion and young Australian of the year, who has 18 wins from 96 starts in all classes after his victory in Qatar, and it would not surprise if Webber is jealous of his compatriot. Read more…

ITV on starting grid for F1 online content

UK terrestrial ITV has signed an online rights deal with Formula 1 Management ahead of the racing season’s first green light in Australia this weekend.

[SB decode wk 2 fri] The acquisition makes ITV’s website the online home of Formula 1 in the UK, supporting the broadcast coverage on ITV1 and offering exclusive interactive features and news, as well as post-race highlights.

As part of the deal, ITV will stream live simulcasts of the races on its website, along with video clips of previously neglected action including the Friday practice, not currently broadcast on any channel in the UK. Read more…

Ecclestone the Ringmaster: Aging Formula 1 boss shows no signs of slowing down

espite his 77 years, Bernie Ecclestone shows no sign of relinquishing the hold which he has exerted on Formula 1 racing since 1972. Slightly-built, gray-haired and quick-witted, he likes to deny that the billions he’s made from promoting F1 racing are in his own name. "I’m just lucky to be married to a wealthy woman," he snaps at enquirers. Evidently Mrs Slavica Ecclestone, a native of Croatia, has better access than her British-born husband does to the sort of off-shore tax shelters where the family resources can grow in their retirement. 2008 world championship preview

The 2007 Formula 1 world championship will go down as one of the most fascinating and memorable seasons in many a year.

Gone was the dominating presence of Michael Schumacher; McLaren had a reigning world champion on their hands for the first time in years and they also made the decision to add rising starlet Lewis Hamilton to their payroll.

Twelve months and we know what the results were – Kimi Raikkonen is World Champion, Fernando Alonso has returned to Renault after a public and bitter falling out with Ron Dennis, and McLaren have firmly backed Hamilton as the man to return the team to title-winning ways. Read more…
