Transition Year Students Eoin O’Connell, Conor Daly and Sean Clery, from St. David’s Secondary School, Greystones have qualified for the National Finals of the Formula 1 in Schools’ competition.

The Koni Kats’ qualified after their appearance at the Regional Final of the competition held at Blanchardstown Institute of Technology on last Tuesday where they competed against other schools from all over Leinster.

The competitors must design a model Formula 1 racing car using 3D CAD on their computer. Their designs are then manufactured, painted and raced at the competition.

As well as qualifying for the National Finals, the Koni Kats won the category awards for Best Marketing/Sponsorship and Best use of ICT and CAD.

The competition is sponsored by Honda, Dell, ICS and being run in St. David’s by Eoin O’Connell, Manager and Manufacturing Engineer, Sean Cleary, Design Engineer and Graphical Designer and Conor Daly, Marketing, Communications and Resource Manager.

The team used a 3-D computer aided design software to design a model Formula 1 car to be manufactured using computer controlled machinery.

They also ran a marketing campaign to get exposure for their project and to raise funds for the purchase of their own computer aided router which they used to make the car.

A group of fifth year students at the school were also thrilled to qualify for the finals of the Irish Young Film Makers Competition 2008.

The group known as Fisty Cuffs’ made and entered their film during transition year and have qualified for the finals at the Fresh Film Festival in Limerick tomorrow.

The winners of the National Final will go forward to represent Ireland at the World Championships in 2009.
